Frequently asked questions
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that lets you activate a cellular data plan without a physical SIM card. Most modern smartphones support eSIM — you simply scan a QR code and you're connected.
After purchase, you'll receive a QR code and a direct install link by email. You can either scan the QR code (Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > Add eSIM > Scan QR Code) or simply tap the install link on your phone to set up the eSIM automatically — no scanning needed. Your data plan will activate instantly.

For a one-week trip, 1–3 GB is enough for most travellers. Use about 1 GB if you mostly use maps and messaging, 3–5 GB for regular social media and browsing, and an unlimited-data plan if you stream video or make frequent video calls. BlueGo offers GB packs and unlimited plans so you can match your usage.
It depends on the activity. Maps and messaging use very little — around 50–100 MB per day. Social media and web browsing use roughly 200–500 MB per day. Streaming video and video calls are the heaviest, using 1 GB or more per hour, so for those an unlimited-data plan is the safest choice.
For most travellers a travel eSIM is cheaper and more predictable than carrier roaming. Roaming often charges high per-day or per-MB fees and can lead to surprise bills, while a BlueGo eSIM is a fixed price you pay up front for a set amount of data. You also keep your home number active for calls and texts, and the eSIM handles your data — no SIM swap and no bill shock.
Yes, if your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked. eSIM is supported on iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and most recent Samsung Galaxy S, Note and Z models, among many others. To check quickly: on iPhone go to Settings > Cellular and look for "Add eSIM"; on Android go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. If the option appears, your device supports eSIM.
Yes. Modern phones support dual SIM, so you can keep your home SIM active for calls and texts while the BlueGo eSIM handles mobile data abroad. Just set the travel eSIM as your data line in your phone settings and turn off data roaming on your home line to avoid extra charges.
The best eSIM for Japan is one that covers your whole trip on a reliable local network at a fixed price. For a typical 1–2 week visit with maps, translation apps and social media, a 3–10 GB plan works well; choose unlimited if you stream or tether a lot. BlueGo offers Japan eSIMs with instant QR activation — see current plans and prices on our Japan destination page.
The best eSIM for the USA covers the whole country on a strong nationwide network at a fixed price, with no contract. For 1–2 weeks of maps, rideshare apps, social media and browsing, a 5–10 GB plan is a good fit; pick unlimited for heavy streaming or hotspot use. BlueGo offers USA eSIMs activated instantly by QR code — check live plans on our United States destination page.
For a multi-country trip in Europe, the best option is a single regional eSIM that works across many European countries, so you don't need a new SIM at each border. For 1–2 weeks of maps, social media and browsing, 5–10 GB is usually enough; choose unlimited for streaming. BlueGo offers regional Europe eSIMs with instant QR activation — see coverage and prices on our destinations page.
Usually just one. If your countries are within the same region — for example several European countries — a single regional eSIM covers them all, so you don't need a separate plan per country. For trips spanning different continents, a regional or global plan, or one eSIM per region, is the simplest setup. BlueGo offers both single-country and regional eSIMs so you can pick the best fit.
An eSIM costs a fixed price you pay once, based on how much data and how many days you choose — small GB packs are budget-friendly and unlimited plans cost more. There are no contracts, no roaming surcharges and no hidden fees. Prices vary by destination and plan size, so the best way to see the exact cost is to open your destination on BlueGo and view the live plans.
Yes — install your eSIM while you still have internet (home Wi-Fi works perfectly), because adding the eSIM needs a connection to download the profile. The best practice is to install it before you travel and simply turn it on when you land. Installing the eSIM does not start the plan; your data validity begins when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination (or as stated on the plan).
Yes, on most BlueGo plans you can share your data via your phone's personal hotspot, so a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone can connect through it. Hotspot use draws from the same data allowance, so if you plan to tether often, choose a larger GB pack or an unlimited plan. Any plan-specific limits are noted on the plan.
